Let's talk about...Travel

Did you know chocolate coins were legal currency?

Well, they were to Aztecs and it’s just one of the many fun facts in the latest ‘Let’s Talk About Parenting’ podcast, hosted by Questa Kids founder Laura Curtis.

In episode 2, Laura chats everything you ever wanted to know about taking kids travelling with guest expert Dr Ruth Talbot.

It’s packed with amazing tips on how to handle airport tantrums to how to travel with youngsters affected by autism, stimulation or attention deficit.

Here’s a flavour of the help and advice in the LTAP travel episode and if you want to find out more, you can tune in here.

1.       Travel doesn’t have to be expensive

It can just be a different experience. Don’t  underestimate the excitement of taking a bus ride. And it can also be familiar. Revisiting a loved park, gallery or  museum. Or even pretending the Disney Store is Disneyland!

2.       If you are staying somewhere different

Use this as an educational opportunity. Ask kids to research what they would like to do, whether it’s visiting a different UK location or further afield. This helps develop independent thought and allowing them to make choices. You could for example, role play a foreign café and encourage kids to order what they want in a different language. Their reward is getting the treat and, in the meantime, helps them solidify the experience (and start to get too grips with learning a language).

3.       Serendipity

Whilst you do need to plan some things, there’s also something wonderful in seeing where the day will take you. A simple stroll can lead to a wonderful adventure with new sights and experiences.

4.       Worried about airport tantrums?

Most kids will fall asleep in take off because the air pressure dips. So let them sleep! But make them familiar with the whole procedure, what will happen when they arrive at the airport, what happens to luggage, what happens at security, what happens when you board a plane. Show pictures and videos. Also try to avoid tantrum triggers such as hunger, boredom and tiredness.

5.       Kids getting sick

From taking a kit to what to do if they get ill abroad (and the importance of travel insurance). There’s everything you need to know.
