Want to see your own name written in Katakana?

Katakana is one of the Japanese alphabets which is used for writing foreign names (because some sounds don’t exist in Japanese). Click on the button below, then try writing your own name out to see how it would look in the Japanese alphabet.

Draw it out and send us a copy!

You’ve received a third token!

Don’t forget to write down the letter on the token - you’ll need it later…

If you tried the Katakana activity above, you might recognize this word! It’s “Questa” written in Katakana.

You’ve also received a Famous Woman Badge!

Murasaki Shikibu was a real person

Murasaki worked in the Japanese royal palace in Kyoto. Murasaki learned to read and write in secret (women weren’t allowed to write in Japan at that time) and then wrote a long book called the Tale of Genji. It was all about life in the palace and the people who lived there.

The Tale of Genji became very famous. Murasaki is very popular in Japan today, even though her book was written 1,000 years ago!

Every time you meet a woman who was a known historical figure, you get a Famous Woman Badge.
